Jitka has trained as a biologist with a focus on mathematical modelling in evolution and ecology.

She has obtained her PhD in Zoology in 2005 from the Charles University in Prague. Since her PhD, she has been developing fundamental theory of species’ connectivity and its limits, working both on theory of speciation and species’ range evolution.

Her research focuses on advancing theory to address fundamental questions in evolutionary ecology and specifically, on the evolution of species’ ranges in the light of environmental change. Recently, she has provided the first testable predictions for a collapse of a species’ range, which arises from an intrinsic interplay between evolutionary and ecological dynamics. She has also described the phenomenon of dynamic range fragmentation (due to failure to adapt), and secured research funding to study this interesting process in both static and changing environments.

The methods employed involve both analytical and numerical treatments for models that combine population genetics with ecological dynamics. Recently, she has been also involved in epidemiological modelling.
